Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Children’s Medical Center at Rockford Health System provides the most advanced care for newborns and children in the region. We are recognized by the Illinois Department of Public Health as a Pediatric Critical Care Center. This distinction makes us one of only 10 hospitals in Illinois recognized for providing the highest level of specialized critical care and emergency care services to children.

Our 20-bed inpatient pediatric unit is staffed by Pediatric Hospitalists, who specialize in the care of hospitalized children. Pediatric Hospitalists provide 24-hours in-house coverage. Our seven-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU)—the only one in the area—is staffed by Pediatric Intensivists and has been in existence for 25 years. Pediatric Intensivists provider 24-hour in-house/on-call coverage.

We practice family-centered care for all of our hospitalized children. Four child life specialists help children understand medical procedures and diagnoses through play therapy, accompany children through procedures, and offer psychological and emotional support to children and their families.

Rockford Memorial Hospital's PICU participates in Virtual PICU Systems (VPS), which advocates for quality of care provided to critically ill children.
