Mercyhealth’s unique pulmonary services emphasize the continuum of care. From screening and prevention to acute care, rehabilitation and home care, we cover all the bases.

To provide the best service possible to our patients, we also offer an in-house pulmonary function lab staffed full-time by licensed respiratory therapists.

Mercyhealth Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center

Our certified Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center is staffed by licensed respiratory therapists, certified exercise specialists, and a licensed nutritional specialist. It offers Phase II and Phase III programs that help patients improve quality of life through exercise and breathing techniques.

What is the Mercyhealth Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center?

The Mercyhealth Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center is a program that has supervised exercise, training, education, nutritional counseling, breathing retraining, and emotional support for patients to improve their physical and emotional well-being.

Patients come to rehabilitation for:

  • Use of  treadmills
  • Laughter
  • Moving/riding bikes
  • Resistance bands
  • Ergometers
  • Help and info
  • Activities
  • Balls / free weights / exercise

Two Programs are Offered at Mercyhealth

Phase 2 Program

The Mercyhealth Phase 2 Program is for those who need assistance, monitoring, and education to cope with their chronic lung disease or those who are recommended by their physician to improve their shortness of breath and endurance.

You can benefit from this program if you have:

  • Asthma
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Neuromuscular Disease
  • Lung Cancer
  • History of smoking
  • Lung surgery or lung reduction surgery

Among the benefits of this program are: 

  • Education on lung disease to help you understand and manage your lung condition
  • Breathing retraining
  • Ability to perform activities of daily living
  • Nutritional counseling by a dietician
  • Emotional support
  • Improved physical endurance
  • Living with oxygen
  • Decrease number of hospitalizations/emergency room visits

Length of program

The program consists of three visits per week, up to 12 weeks.  Classes are offered in the morning or afternoon.  Our team is comprised of specialists, including a pulmonary physician, respiratory therapists, dietician, and exercise specialists. Together, we work on a care plan that fits your needs for both the short term and long term.

Participation Requirements for Mercyhealth Phase 2

  • Written order from your physician within the last 90 days
  • Complete Pulmonary Function Test documenting an impairment of function level
  • Participante must be physically able, motivated and willing to participate
  • Non-smoker or willingness to enroll in a smoking cessation program

Fitness for Life Program

The Mercyhealth Fitness for Life Program is for those who are self-motivated and want to exercise independently in a facility with specialists available.

  • Order from your physician stating you are cleared to exercise independently
  • Current medication list
  • Smoking cessation programs are offered
