Cancer Care

The Radiation Oncology Department at Rockford Memorial Hospital plays a major role in the multi-disciplinary approach for cancer care. A wide variety of treatment options are offered, including state-of-the-art technology in which to deliver specialized radiation treatments for each patient’s individual needs.

The Department of Radiation Oncology has an outstanding staff. We are equipped with an Elekta SLi linear accelerator with both photon and electron treatment capabilities. The treatment is planned using a highly-advanced 3D treatment planning computer system.

Rockford Health System was the first health care system in Rockford to offer IMRT treatments. Intensity modulated radiation therapy is a specialized delivery of radiation via small “beamlets” with varying intensity, computed by a sophisticated planning system to allow maximum sparing of healthy tissue. With IMRT, the radiation can be broken up into many tiny beams and the intensity of each beam can be adjusted individually. IMRT provides improved patient clinical outcomes with less side effects.

In addition to IMRT capabilities, our linear accelerator delivers dual-energy photons in order to treat 3-D conformal planned fields and other standard therapies. The linear accelerator also has a range of five electron energies for superficial treatment options.
