Rockford Health System celebrated a commitment to quality and continuous improvement by recognizing the winners of the 2013 Jack W. Packard Quality Champion Awards.
The annual Jack W. Packard Quality Champion Awards recognize both a physician and an employee in the organization who exemplify an outstanding commitment to quality and safety in patient care. The award is named in honor of long-time member of the Rockford Health System Board of Directors, Jack W. Packard, a well-known area business leader who has helped guide performance improvement efforts at Rockford Health System for decades.
The staff award was presented to Deb Esparza, the Application Project Manager for IMS. Esparza successfully brought the large departments of radiology, surgery, pharmacy and oncology live with the Epic electronic medical record system. She also served as the Epic Ambulatory Project Manager and implemented a successful go-live over three phases between April 2011 and October 2011. She facilitated the Computerized Order Entry evaluation test for the Leapfrog meaningful use survey which resulted in Rockford Memorial Hospital receiving 4 bars on the 2013 survey compared to no bars in the previous survey – positively affecting RMH’s overall Leapfrog score. She is an outstanding leader and mentor who has demonstrated an ability to motivate teams to actively develop and support solutions to improve patient safety and quality care.
The physician award was presented to Connie Vitali, M.D., the Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Medical Director of the Lab. Dr. Vitali is a critical member of the Laboratory’s Quality Management Committee, challenging all members to look at every issue from the patient’s perspective. She worked collaboratively with the Epic electronic medical records team to enhance the system by providing a seamless and fluid transition for patients, ensuring the accuracy of lab result reporting and assisting physicians in the ease of data access. Dr. Vitali always solves problems at the root cause, while gaining input and perspective from all involved. She works toward resolution only after all options have been carefully considered, focusing on the best possible outcome.
