Emergency Department & Level 1 Trauma Center

For adults and children who become critically injured or ill, Rockford Health System is the leader in trauma and emergency care throughout northwest Illinois, eastern Iowa, and southern Wisconsin.

We are designated by the Illinois Department of Public Health as a Level I Trauma Center, which means we provide the highest level of specialized trauma and critical care services.

REACT, our critical care transport helicopter, is staffed by two highly skilled transport nurses.

Our emergency department has more than 24 specialty physicians on call every day. We also have the region’s only critical care and pediatric intensive care units staffed by specially-trained critical care and pediatric intensivists.

We are also the lead hospital in disaster response and coordination. The Illinois Department of Public Health has designated us as the Regional Hospital Coordinating Center for the northern Illinois Emergency Medical Services (EMS) region.

Rock River Regional EMS is one of the region’s largest EMS system and resource training centers in northern Illinois. The Rockford Health System's Emergency Communication Center coordinates multiple ambulances, agencies, aircraft response, trauma team, cath lab, the MD REACT regional referral center and regional disaster communications and includes the Regional American Heart Association Training Coordinating Center.
