Volunteer Opportunities

The volunteer program at Rockford Health System was founded in 1953 by Della Behr, an Auxilian who believed volunteers could be a valuable resource to Rockford Memorial Hospital.  The service group began formal operations when the current hospital opened its doors in 1954.  By the end of the first year, the group had over 100 volunteers who donated more than 18,000 hours.

Currently, more than 350 volunteers work in over 30 areas of the hospital.  They generously donate more than 30,000 hours per year.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Working in the Auxiliary Gift Shop or Thrift Shop;
  • Transporting patients upon admission or discharge, or who are being treated on an outpatient basis;
  • Giving information to visitors at the Visitor Information Desk;
  • Greeting and checking patients in for outpatient procedures at the Surgical Family Waiting area desk or at the Endoscopy Center;
  • Delivering flowers or mail to hospitalized patients;
  • Visiting patients and family members through our Friendly Visitor Program and distribute comfort items to our Palliative Care patients and family members.
  • Assisting with non-clinical tasks in a variety of nursing units such as: the Cancer Center, the Emergency Department, Outpatient Surgery, and Pediatrics.
  • Assisting with clerical tasks in a variety of offices;
