Every woman wants to have a bodacious body that emphasizes a sexy silhouette. For some women who are not blessed to have big breasts, getting cosmetic surgery is the only way for them to achieve their dream bodies. This is why breast augmentation is still one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the whole world. But you may ask, how long do silicone breast implants last and what can be the complications? Dr Ron, expert surgeon for breast implants near Perth, explains all the answers to these things.

Saline or Silicone: How long do silicone breast implants last?

Cosmetic surgeons would agree that saline and silicone implants do not last a lifetime. Their efficiency in improving and enhancing the size and shape of your breasts can only last for about 10 to 20 years. Some of them even shorter than that, and there are different factors that affect the integrity of an implant.

When to replace your breast implants

Before your cosmetic surgery procedure, your surgeon would have explained to you in detail about what to expect after the process, how to keep your implants safe from complications, and when to seek medical attention. He may have informed you that you would have to expect that your breast implants may be replaced within 10 to 15 years of use, some even as early as after 8 years. It is but essential then to have a regular check up with your surgeon and undergo MRI to make sure that the implants are still intact. Here are some signs that your implants need to be replaced.

Capsular contracture

Are your implants feeling hard and your breasts tender to the touch? This may be signs of capsular contracture. As the body heals, it is normal to

form scars around the operative site. However, with capsular contracture, the scar wraps around the implant abnormally, squishing and deforming it until your breasts look deformed as well. It can also feel tight and painful to the touch.

Rupture

duration of breast implants

How long do silicone breast implants last? It is practically the same as saline implants, except of course if they rupture. This event may happen to both types of implants but can cause different effects. With saline, an obvious shrinking of the breasts can be observed since the saline water comes out of the implant and gets absorbed by the body. With silicone implants, the gel-like material is retained inside and would not cause any side effect so knowing it already ruptured may be tricky. Late symptoms can arise including tightening, tenderness around the area or a burning sensation as tiny leaks of the silicone may happen over time.

Change in position and appearance

If the implants develop wrinkles, the appearance of the breasts would also look wrinkled. When you can feel that the breasts are waving or is looking less natural than before, maybe you should consider replacing them. Moreover, as you age after breast augmentation, the implants may be worsening the appearance of the breasts as they naturally sag, so discuss with your doctor what other options you have to retain the enhancement and improve your shape.
