Before and after rhinoplasty: What to expect

Before your nose job

You are a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:

  • You are generally healthy
  • You have a developed nose (Teens need to wait until their noses are developed because facial growth can alter the results.)
  • Kids can have rhinoplasty for congenital defects (cleft palate) but not necessarily for aesthetics

Tips on making the decision to undergo rhinoplasty

Talk to your doctor. No one has the right to dictate what you want to do with your body. Improving your facial profile by undergoing a nose job should be your personal decision. However, consulting a trusted plastic surgeon can give you better insight as to how it will or will not help you look and feel good about yourself. Take to heart their intelligent and educated opinion, you can even get second or third opinions if you wish.

Curb your expectations. Rhinoplasty is not magic. It is considered a major surgery because although the nose is a small part of the body, its function is vital for our respiration, thus, intricate and complex surgical steps should be precisely performed to ensure the patient’s safety. Expecting that you will look like a celebrity after a nose job may be asking for too much. Remember that rhinoplasty is done in symmetry to your facial profile, making it look more natural than fake.

Do not be afraid to ask questions. Inquire about how the operation will come about, what to do before and after rhinoplasty, what to expect after the surgery, your restrictions and limitation, the cost, your insurance coverage, recovery time, and other things that are making you curious about the cosmetic procedure and would make you decide to push through or not.

After your rhinoplasty

after rhinoplastyImmediately after the surgery, your nasal area will be covered by bandages and nasal splints may be inserted to protect and maintain the position of the improvement.

Discomfort. Your doctor may discuss this before and after rhinoplasty that the surgery will elicit pain and tenderness to your face, particularly to the eye, nose, cheek, and mouth area. Since it is an invasive procedure, lesions inside and outside of the nose are made, so swelling, redness, slight bleeding, and bruising may be expected for the next few days and weeks.

Activities. Bed rest is recommended by the plastic surgeon in Miranda at Dr Alan Evans clinic for the first few days so you can gather up your strength and get back to your normal self. The surgery can cause fatigue and restlessness so resting is a good way to cope with postoperative symptoms. A gradual increase in activity, from light exercises to sedentary workload can be performed in the coming weeks, as long as no pressure and force is exerted to the nose.

Work. Most patients can go back to work with limitations and restrictions maybe after two to three weeks. They can expect that tenderness and bruising may subside by then, although swelling can still come and go for the next couple of months.
